Saints Sarkis and Bacchus

October 7, 2016

Sarkis (Sergius or Serge) and Bacchus were fourth-century Roman Christian soldiers revered as martyrs and saints by the Catholic and  Orthodox Churches. Their feast day is 7 October.

According to tradition, Sarkis and Bacchus were officers in the Emperor’s army, and were held high in his favor until they were exposed as secret Christians.  According to the written texts, Sarkis and Bacchus were Roman citizens and high-ranking officers of the Roman Army, but their covert Christianity was discovered when they attempted to avoid accompanying a Roman official into a pagan temple with the rest of his bodyguard. After they persisted in refusing to sacrifice to Jupiter in, they were publicly humiliated by being chained, dressed in female attire and paraded around town. They were tried but could not be convinced to give up their faith.

They were very popular saints throughout in the early Church, and churches in their honor were built in several cities, including Constantinople and Rome.  St. Raymond Church honors both saints with a large icon (the soldiers on horse-back).

Saints Sarkis and Bacchus, pray for us!
